Depok, November 8, 2023 – Business Administration students from the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FIA UI), conducted a company visit to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (PT BEI) on Wednesday (December 6, 2023). This visit aimed to provide students with a firsthand understanding of PT BEI’s business processes and innovations.
In his opening remarks, delivered by Dr. Rachma Fitriati, M.Si., M.Si. (Han), FIA UI Dean Prof. Dr. Chandra Wijaya, MM, explained that the company visit serves as a platform for student development. It allows students to understand how business administration is applied in corporate settings, bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world practice, and provide insights into the professional working environment.
Jeffrey Hendrik, Director of Development at PT BEI, shared insights on the growth of the Indonesia Stock Exchange since its establishment. “The President recently inaugurated the Indonesia Carbon Exchange at PT BEI, marking a significant milestone. As of November 30, there are 12 million investors managing IDR 10,900 trillion in market capitalization. The younger generation is increasingly aware of the importance of investing for their future. Given Indonesia’s vast economic potential, we can be optimistic that the capital market will continue to grow, driving investment growth—as long as investment decisions are made rationally,” he stated.
Iding Pardi, President Director of PT Indonesian Clearing and Guarantee Corporation (KPEI), emphasized the rising interest among young investors, with 60% of investors being under the age of 30. “The financial industry requires strict regulations because people are entrusting their money to it, and maintaining public trust is crucial. Hence, the industry must be highly regulated. We hope this visit inspires students to deepen their understanding of the capital market,” he added.
Adjie Bagoes Hermanto, Market Development Officer at PT BEI, stressed the importance of financial planning and early investment. “Financial uncertainties will arise in the future while our needs will continue to grow. Indonesia’s capital market has vast potential, supported by a large and expanding middle class, alongside increasing investment literacy and awareness,” he explained.
Puspita Pratiwi, Product Development Senior Analyst at BEI, shared insights about IDXCarbon, an initiative supporting Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals by facilitating carbon trading. “BEI is committed to providing the infrastructure for Indonesia’s Carbon Trading under the supervision of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), ensuring transparency, liquidity, efficiency, and ease of access,” she explained.
She also highlighted the increasing importance of carbon economics due to environmental degradation. “Six out of nine planetary boundaries have been exceeded, contributing to climate change. The Paris Agreement aims to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 1.5°C. By understanding the value of carbon economics, we can support sustainable practices and mitigate the negative effects of climate change,” Puspita added.
Dr. Rachma Fitriati praised the company visit as a practical implementation of classroom learning. “This visit enhances students’ understanding of corporate business processes, particularly those of PT BEI, and provides direct exposure to real-world professional practices,” she said.
She also emphasized the importance of preparing students to become agile learners—skilled, adaptable, and resilient individuals. “According to the Directorate General of Higher Education, university students must be equipped to be agile learners. Creativity and innovation are crucial to ensuring sustainable development in Indonesia,” Rachma stated.
The visit to PT BEI is part of a broader effort to increase students’ knowledge of the capital market and stock investments. Such initiatives are encouraged to continue across Indonesian universities to better prepare students for the increasingly competitive job market.
“We greatly appreciate the opportunity given to FIA UI students to broaden their understanding of the working world. We hope this activity fosters stronger collaboration between UI and PT BEI as part of an ongoing partnership between national universities and Indonesia’s capital market,” Rachma concluded.
This visit marks a significant step in enhancing FIA UI students’ knowledge and readiness to face the challenges of the working world, particularly in the capital market and investment sectors.
