All this time, DKI Jakarta was only know for its Soto Betawi, there are people that forgot that Betawi also has a distinctive batik. Unmitigatedly, there are 12 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSMEs) spread around the Jabodetabek area. This batik center is active in producing Betawi batik, in both writing and stamp types, with various Betawi nuances such as an Ondel- Ondel pattern, a National Monument, the Pancoran Statue or even a pattern of the musical instrument Tanjidor.

Although these MSMEs have stood for some years, they haven’t registered the copyright to the government. So, it is expected that some years ago, Terogong batik, one of the most famous batik in the Betawi community has been plagiarized by being mass produced. However, it cannot be followed up because the copyright has not been registered.

This is what underlies 3 lecturers from the Faculty of Administrative Science Universitas Indonesia (FIA UI) and 1 lecturer from the Faculty of Law Universitas Indonesia to do community service in the form of business and intellectual property rights assistance to the MSMEs of Batik Betawi in Jakarta. The significant development of the digital era demand craftsmen to register their copyright immediately. “when Terogong batik was plagiarized, the people who plagiarized it only apologized. They can’t be prosecuted because of the lack of copyright,” said Nurul Safitri, S.Sos, M.A who is the head of the community service team on Thursday (6/12).
This Business Administration Lecturer also added the focus of assistance, namely to arranging business models and conducting Copyright registration for their batik creations online. She hopes that as much as 4 batik center will follow the assistance and immediately file a register for a copyright in a short time.

Aside from that, the result of this assistance and business model will be followed up to the Department of Tourism and Culture of the DKI Jakarta Province. “ our suggestion for the future is to hold the government accountable for batik patterns because it can be considered one way of cultural preservation. So the task of MSMEs is to create and innovate, the legal issues will be supported by the local government,” added Nurul.
Whereas in compiling a business model, Nurul and her team also made a guide book on How To Use A Business Model canvas for MSMEs in the batik business. Nurul directs MSMEs to digitally prepare by paying attention to their business profile, starting from the target consumers, product advantages, keeping connection with customers, market channels, etc.” After the MSMEs deeply understand the business they are running, they will be able to arrange various business strategies so that the batik Betawi business will hold its ground, “ Nurul said.

This training was attended by 10 participants coming from MSMEs Barik Seraci, Batik Setu Babakan, Batik Terogong, and Batik Kemayoran. Aside from Nurul, the community service team also consists of Eko Sakapurnama, S.Psi, MBA, Dr. Retno Kusumastuti, M.Si and Hening Hapsari, S.H, M.H. (MI)
