The Research, Innovation, and Community Service Unit of the University of Indonesia held a webinar for the Scientific Writing Training Series 2 “Improving Scientific Writing Skills for Publication” on Friday (11/2/2022) at 14.00 to 17.00 WIB.
This webinar was moderated by Dra. Novita Ikasari, M.Comm., Ph.D., CIQaR or often called Mba Nonov. The webinar began with a presentation by Mba Nonov about the importance of knowledge about writing for all students.
“In this webinar, he will help students to find out how to write papers for scientific publications. How to attract and package student foreign workers into writings,” said Mba Nonov.
In this event, the speakers are Prof. Dr. Achmad Nizar Hidayanto, M. Kom. He delivered his material entitled “How To Write A Scholarly Paper.” Prof. Dr. Achmad Nizar Hidayanto, M.Kom explained that the material started from conveying the key elements of publishing which consisted of six things.
Prof. Achmad explained that the first key element is the ethical issue that discusses the basic rules of writing and uploading papers to the journal that is the author’s goal.
The second thing is Style and Language which is very vital in journal writing. In this element, it should be noted that the use of language must be argumentative and supported by valid data and information.
“Each journal has different guidelines, so students need to adjust their writing journals with the requested journals,” said Prof. Dr. Achmad Nizar Hidayanto, M. Kom.
Third, Prof. Dr. Achmad Nizar Hidayanto, M.Kom explained about the structure of the journal where this structure tends to vary in each journal. However, the main guide generally uses an IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) structure. “IMRAD can also be varied according to needs'” he explained.
Fourth is the component of the journal consisting of the title, the author consisting of the main author and other authors, abstract, introduction, and results and conclusions. Prof. Dr. Achmad Nizar Hidayanto, M.Kom explained that the use of titles does not always have to be formal. He also advised the authors to avoid using abbreviations and terms that are not understood by the general public.
“What needs to be emphasized is that the title must include the author’s contribution in the title of the paper being written,” concluded Prof. Achmad.
Meanwhile, for Author Listing, for 1st author it is generally filled by those who have contributed the most in writing the paper. Furthermore, he also mentioned the abstract component which includes the subject matter, methodology, and results and conclusions must be adjusted to the guidelines of each journal.
Furthermore, Prof. Achmad explained in detail about the preliminary components. He said that the introduction was quite complicated. The introductory section must contain the urgency of the topic raised and must have clear research gaps. “The hypothesis also needs to be formulated correctly to fit the context of the problem raised in the paper,” he said.
The last component is the results and conclusions of the research that describe the results obtained and what was found in the research. Other key elements are article submission/journal selection and Publisher’s process/peer review.
The webinar, which was attended by more than 200 participants, took place interactively. Many participants asked and discussed how to write a good paper. Not only students, many lecturers also expressed their opinions and questions.
