Donny Oktavian Syah lahir di Yogyakarta pada tanggal 19 Oktober. Menyelesaikan doctoral degree (S-3) tahun 2020 di Graduate School of International Development, Economic Policy and Management, Nagoya University di prefektur Aichi, Jepang dengan beasiswa BPPLN (Beasiswa Pendidikan Pascasarjana Luar Negeri) Kemendikbud. Mengambil topik dissertasi tentang vertical partnership in automotive industry. Tahun 2005 lulus program master degree (S-2) dari Graduate School of International Management, E-Business Management di International University of Japan (IUJ), Minami Uonuma, Niigata, Jepang dengan bantuan beasiswa JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization).

Sempat meniti karir di beberapa perusahaan di Indonesia dan Jepang, mulai dari manajer pemasaran, trainer dan konsultan manajemen dan bisnis sebelum mengabdikan sebagai seorang menjadi dosen tetap di Departemen Ilmu Administrasi Niaga Universitas Indonesia.

Aktif dalam organisasi Bisnis, sosial dan kemasyarakatan, menjadi pengurus Persada (Persatuan Alumni Dari Jepang) Cabang Jakarta, ADI (Asosiasi Dosen Indonesia), JIK-C (Japan Indonesia Kaizen Center). Menjadi reviewer beberapa jurnal terindeks nasional di Indonesia.
