Depok, April 13, 2026 — The Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FIA UI) held a Joint Class on Sustainability in collaboration with Aarhus University, Denmark. Conducted in a hybrid format, the event brought together students and academics from both institutions in a cross-national discussion on global sustainability issues.
This activity is part of FIA UI’s academic internationalization efforts, while also strengthening students’ understanding of global governance dynamics, particularly in the context of sustainability and energy transition. The event began with introductions to each university and the respective courses involved, followed by presentations from both sides.
Representing Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Ruddy K. Gobel delivered a presentation titled Sustainability in Indonesia: Challenges, Progress, and the Path Toward a Just Energy Transition. He highlighted that Indonesia possesses vast renewable energy potential, yet continues to face structural challenges due to its heavy reliance on fossil fuels. According to him, the transition toward clean energy requires bold policy reforms and a strong commitment to social justice.
Meanwhile, Frederik Vestergaard Hyttel from Aarhus University presented on Sustainability in Denmark. He explained how Denmark has become a global frontrunner in energy transition, supported by target-based policies, technological innovation, and strong collaboration between the government and the private sector. Nevertheless, he also pointed out ongoing challenges, including rising consumption and inequality.
Interactive discussion sessions formed a central part of the event, with students from both universities engaging in exchanges of perspectives on global sustainability issues. The discussions focused on two main themes: the current state of global sustainability and the challenges of energy transition. Participants explored not only their respective national contexts but also the interconnections between issues such as climate change, inequality, and economic development.
Through this activity, students are expected to develop comparative and critical perspectives in understanding sustainability issues. Furthermore, this collaboration reflects FIA UI’s commitment to fostering education that is responsive to global challenges, while strengthening international academic networks.
