Entrepreneurship and leadership in the digital economy play a crucial role in driving economic growth and creating new job opportunities. Digital technology allows entrepreneurs to access broader markets, introduce innovations, enhance visibility, and increase competitiveness. Leadership is also essential for improving financial inclusion, enhancing public service efficiency, and addressing challenges like cybersecurity.

Recognizing the importance of these issues, the Faculty of Administrative Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (FIA UI) organized a public lecture titled “Entrepreneurship and Leadership in the Digital Economy.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Rivan A. Purwantono, President Director of Jasa Raharja, on August 15, 2024, at the Auditorium of FIA UI’s New Building. This event was part of the Faculty Academic System Introduction (PSAF) program for the 2024 cohort of new students.

“In this digital era, artificial intelligence (AI) may foster dependency, but it also offers significant ease in human work. Courage is the key to embracing digitalization, while passion is essential for anyone looking to start a business in the digital sphere,” said Dr. Rivan.

During the lecture, Dr. Rivan explained that digital entrepreneurship significantly impacts several critical aspects of organizational operations. First, digitalization enhances organizational performance by introducing technologies that streamline operational processes, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. Digital tools, such as management software and automation systems, enable organizations to work faster and more accurately.

“Second, decision-making becomes more informed and data-driven due to the availability of data analytics and artificial intelligence. With access to real-time data and in-depth analysis, business leaders can make better and more strategic decisions, ultimately improving business outcomes,” he added.

Dr. Rivan further elaborated on a third point: loyalty and leadership are also influenced by digitalization. Digital technology can strengthen relationships between leaders and their teams by improving communication and transparency. Moreover, the ability to monitor performance and provide real-time feedback helps build trust and commitment among employees.

Finally, employee engagement can be enhanced through digital platforms that facilitate collaboration, learning, and professional development. Digital technology provides easy access to training tools and resources, helping employees feel more connected and invested in their work.

“Overall, digitalization in entrepreneurship not only transforms how organizations operate but also influences internal dynamics that affect performance, decision-making, leadership relationships, and employee engagement,” he concluded.

The lecture ended with a Q&A session where Dr. Rivan responded to students’ questions, including how he overcame the lowest points in his career. He emphasized that every challenge is an opportunity to rise again.

This event provided new students with valuable insights into the importance of leadership and entrepreneurship in the digital economy, preparing them to navigate the business world with a broader and more informed perspective.
