The systematic literature review is a method for making sense of large bodies of information and contributing to answers to questions about what works and what doesn’t—and many other types of questions. A systematic literature review allows the writer or researcher to obtain the main problems, produce a research framework, identify gaps, and answer research questions. This was conveyed by Desy Hariyati, S. Sos, M.A as a lecturer at the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, University of Indonesia (FIA UI).

“Systematic literature review has advantages compared to other methods. Among them are meta-analytical, systematic, and narrative reviews, allowing us to produce more effective research. A systematic literature review makes us think systematically and critically amid rapid technological developments. We must have a critical and systematic mindset and not get lost in research,” said Desy.

Furthermore, Desy revealed that a systematic literature review was used to map areas of uncertainty and identify the level of relevance of the research being conducted. Desy also explained the steps that must be carried out in a systematic literature review divided into three stages. The first stage is the plan review which consists of determining the research topic, developing the review protocol, and validating the review protocol.

“The second stage is conducting a review which consists of identifying relevant research, selecting the main studies, assessing the quality of the studies, extracting data, and synthesizing data. The last stage is the document review, which consists of writing a review report and report validation. The main thing we need to do is read more. Read, read, and read. Try to understand the existing arguments, position ourselves at the author’s feet, and relate it to other literature,” said Desy.

Desy also emphasizes finding relevant research by reducing the principal terms used in research questions. In addition, researchers can also use synonymous terms and alternative words, arrange keywords that appear in the article, and use the word “OR” to include alternative synonyms or “AND” to link the main terms.

For information, Desy conveyed the above in the event, which took place on Friday, May 5, 2023 afternoon via the Zoom Meeting platform. This event was moderated by Leander Reshadatu and organized by Research, Innovation and Community Service (RIMA) FIA UI in collaboration with the Graduate Student Association (HMP) FIA UI.
