Eksplorasi Edukasi (Ekskasi) has conducted a community service program focused on informal primary school education. The team has implemented informal educational interventions at SD Negeri Tajurhalang 05 using contextual learning through inquiry and relating methods.

This program is part of the Community Care Grant Program under the Directorate of Student Affairs at the University of Indonesia, involving 13 active students from various UI faculties, accompanied by one supervising lecturer.

The program aims to provide a new educational perspective and enhance the learning spirit of the students at SD Negeri Tajurhalang 05.

“It is important to provide informal educational interventions from an early age to create a broader impact, from introducing aspirations and fostering inter-racial tolerance to disaster prevention. This is our first step as UI students to contribute to the education sector,” said Ekskasi Project Officer, Sultan Zachri Dipo.

Over approximately one week, from August 10 to 17, 2024, Ekskasi conducted several informal classes, such as “Dream Crafting Class,” where students were introduced to various professions through hands-on experiences as doctors, judges, forensic experts, reporters, scientists, and archaeologists.

Another session, “I Know, I Am Ready!” focused on disaster prevention measures, including how to handle floods and landslides. This class also involved planting potted plants as a commitment to environmental conservation.

The Literacy Class emphasized the importance of literacy for the future. For younger students, the focus was on improving reading skills, while older students learned how to operate computers, navigate the web, and use digital tools such as the online Indonesian dictionary (KBBI), Google Translate, and educational platforms like Bobo.id.

For fifth-grade students, a simulation of the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) was conducted to familiarize them with operating laptops and digital literacy. This was followed by the “Love Everyone Class,” an informal session promoting tolerance across ethnicities, cultures, and religions, along with anti-bullying education through interactive post-to-post activities.

The “Know Your Body” class aimed to raise awareness among students about their bodily autonomy and to foster a safe school environment free from sexual violence.

For first to third graders, the curriculum included body autonomy education through songs, hygiene practices such as tooth-brushing, and healthy lifestyle habits using a quiz format. Meanwhile, fourth to sixth graders focused on puberty education.

On August 17, Ekskasi also organized a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day, followed by traditional games like a cracker-eating contest, balloon relay, and pencil-in-the-bottle competition for students and teachers.

The Ekskasi team hopes this initiative will instill moral values in students as a foundation for pursuing their dreams. Given the limited availability of informal education as a basis for understanding broader societal contexts, programs like these play a crucial role.
